photo_0162292059puvtzrThe northern kingdom of Israel had been taken into captivity by the Assyrians. Nebuchadnezzar was given Assyria by God, and was making his way to the southern kingdom of Judah. Instead of drawing nearer to God during such a threatening time, Judah placed their trust in the access they had to the temple. They lived ungodly lives, then made sacrifices and offerings to God, thinking it nullified the continual wickedness. Jeremiah told them to remember Shiloh, a place the Israelites were defeated by the Philistines despite the presence of the Ark of the Covenant (cf. Jeremiah 7; 1 Samuel 4). We must not think we are safe by association with the church. We must walk in righteousness to be right with God.
