“The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both” (Proverbs 20:12).
This proverb seems to simply state a fact. Yet, the fact is quite astounding. God’s wisdom is unmatched, and His creative power, unfathomable. In his obduracy, man refuses to accept the existence of a Creator. He cries, “Where is the proof?” And the inspired pen writes, “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both.”
And still, the thirst for wisdom seeks a deeper implication. These that the Lord has made have functions – the ear hears, and the eye sees. He expects us to put them to use! Some men seek salvation with their feelings. God says to listen to His gospel (cf. James 1:19-21; Romans 1:16-17; 10:17). Some want to be shown a sign from heaven to renew their confidence, and give them comfort. God tells us to see all He has done that is recorded in His word (cf. Romans 15:4). Others suggest we cannot know which of the many doctrines are true. God assures that we can by hearing them, and searching the scriptures to find whether the things spoken are of God (cf. Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1-3).
It is a sad thing that many will hear the words from Jesus, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23). If only they would choose to hear now. If only they would choose to see now. Yet, “Seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand; Lest they should turn, and their sins be forgiven them” (Mark 4:12). Won’t you hear?! Won’t you see?!
