Acts 8 records the conversion of an Ethiopian eunuch. There is much to learn from the inspired record. We can learn how to successfully evangelize, what it means to “preach Jesus,” what is necessary to receive the remission of sins, how wonderful it is to be forgiven, etc. However, let us consider The Heart of the Ethiopian Eunuch.
First, we understand his heart was concerned with spiritual matters. He “had come to Jerusalem to worship” (v. 27), and while returning to Ethiopia he was reading from Isaiah (v. 28). We, like the Ethiopian, should understand the importance of spiritual things.
Second, his heart was willing to have an open discussion with another about those spiritual matters. Philip was instructed by an angel of the Lord to approach the eunuch. When Philip began to explain the scripture to him, he gave him a fair hearing like the Bereans (vv. 31-35; cf. Acts 17:11).
Third, his heart was honest concerning the truth. Jesus said, “seek and you will find” (Matthew 7:7), and that is exactly what the Ethiopian was doing. His heart sought after the truth, and when he found it he believed it (v. 37).
Finally, his heart was eager to obey. Included in “preaching Jesus” is the precept of baptism. Without being baptized, we cannot be saved (cf. Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21; etc.). When he saw water, he did not tarry, but took advantage of the opportunity and obeyed the truth (vv. 37-39).
We should cultivate our hearts to emulate that of the Ethiopian eunuch!
