“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting” (Psalm 136:1, NASB).
Psalm 136 is a great manifestation of the constancy of God’s lovingkindness. The concept of “lovingkindness” (ḥeseḏ) denotes the condescension of the transcendent Creator to His creation in love, mercy, goodness, and loyalty in fulfilment of their needs (“mercy,” NKJV; “steadfast love,” ESV, RSV; “faithful love,” CSB). The focal point of this lovingkindness is His creation of mankind, with an even more pointed focus toward His sanctified ones. Psalm 136 shows us the immutable, and inexhaustible nature of His lovingkindness.
It is expressed in His powerful position as the one and only God. As He reigns sovereign, He does so with a powerful hand of mercy, and steadfast love (v. 1-3).
It is emphasized in His entire creation. All that was made is for the benefit of the inhabitants of the earth. Mankind as the focal point of creation is even more impressive (v. 4-9) (cf. Psalm 8).
The most wonderful appearance of His lovingkindness is found with those who are His people. The Israelites continued under the guidance, provision, love, and mercy of His “strong hand and…outstretched arm” (v. 10-26).
We too, can be continual recipients of His lovingkindness – “But the lovingkindness of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, To those who keep His covenant and remember His precepts to do them.” (Psalm 103:17-18, NASB).
