A large sect of the religious world hold’s to the concept of subjective guidance via the Holy Spirit. In other words, “I know this is right. I feel it! God spoke to me!” This is a popular fallacy to follow. If one claim’s that God spoke directly to them, who can say otherwise? However, this contradicts common logic. If God is perfect, infallible, and the truth, shouldn’t His subjective guidance to individuals coincide with His word spoken in scripture? Why then does the “Holy Spirit” guide so many individuals in ways different from each other, and different from the bible? He doesn’t. They guide themselves.
The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jeremiah 10:23). For this reason God has supplied us with an objective standard to follow. This pattern seen in scripture clearly illustrates the point that God’s will is communicated to man via sola scriptura – only scripture.
“God…has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2). God HAS spoken. The inspired apostle Peter wrote that God “HAS GIVEN to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3).
Jesus made the statement to His apostles that the Holy Spirit would guide them into ALL truth (cf. John 16:13). If that be the case, it can’t be possible that He is still revealing truth.
Scripture is given, “that the man of God may be complete” (2 Timothy 3:16). Our spiritual growth requires nothing else, and cannot be accomplished through any other means.
Lastly, the truth was not given, and is not given to one man individually. God has given US the gospel which was “ONCE FOR ALL delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).
