Temporary – Our time on earth is not meant to be permanent. James wrote, “for what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). All of our time is running out (cf. 2 Peter 3).
Important – Time is given to us by God. He expects us to use it for good! We cannot renew the time we have already spent. Therefore, “see then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).
Misused – Our time on earth is meant for fearing God and keeping His commandments (cf. Ecclesiastes 12:13). Solomon described the misuse of time – “’Vanity of vanities,’ says the Preacher; ‘Vanity of Vanities, all is vanity’” (Ecclesiastes 1:2).
Eternal – Time is indeed temporary, but when Christ comes we will be introduced to eternity (cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:17). Eternity is a word used by the Lord to help us further understand the concept of a place not measured, or constrained by time. The Lord is eternal – “With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8). Eternity is spent in one of two places (cf. Matthew 25:46). Where will you spend eternity?
