Contentment is an interesting quality. It is attainable by anyone no matter what gender, race, income, etc. It is completely independent of all outward circumstances. Just as Paul wrote, “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and suffer need” (Philippians 4:11-12). However, true contentment is only found in one area – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (v. 13). It is present with one who has a relationship with the Savior of mankind. Contentment is found with Christ because He provides:
- The way to God (cf. John 14:6).
- Remission of sins (cf. Matthew 26:28).
- Guidance into all truth (cf. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16).
- Help in time of need (cf. Hebrews 4:14-16).
- Physical necessities (cf. Matthew 7:25-34).
There are many things that can be added to the list. A Christian must count his blessings in Christ and remember to be content. The spiritually discerning man possesses far greater riches than the wealthiest on earth. So, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:5-6).
