Read God’s word – Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, “stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle” (2 Thessalonians 2:15). The apostles orally revealed God’s will when they went everywhere preaching. However, God’s will was for His word to be written down in completed form (cf. 1 Corinthians 13:10). “By which, when you read, you may understand [the] knowledge in the mystery of Christ” (Ephesians 3:4).
Examine yourself – “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5). Self-examination is a necessary part of transforming ourselves by God’s word. It is not enough to simply know those things which pertain to life and godliness. We must make sure we are living that way!
Avoid those who are contrary – “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them” (Romans 16:17). In order to grow we must surround ourselves with those who are also in the faith. We must not fool ourselves – “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits’” (1 Corinthians 15:33).
Do all in the name of the Lord – “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17). Upon reading, examining, and avoiding, we must continue doing exactly as God commands. Many wish to pick and choose which passages to follow. If we love Jesus, we will do all He says (cf. John 14:15).
