In His incarnation, Jesus spoke many things of which His apostles heard, both in public and private settings. He spoke of His nature, and relationship with the Father. He spoke of the impending kingdom, of its law and blessings. However, His humiliation was intended to be temporary, and His glorification was soon to come. He would be with them in this state for only a little while. Yet, He would continue to be with them through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s work would be to reveal, and remind them of the truth.
The desired outcome of the promises Jesus gave to His disciples in this context, and before, is peace. His work in redemption is that which makes for peace, and the revealed truth of God’s will allows us to secure it. This true peace is only offered by Christ. Additionally, the fact that He is leaving to go to the Father should cause rejoicing. For, Jesus is the Author and Captain, and He is coming back to be glorified in His saints (cf. 2 Thessalonians 1:10) – “that where I am, there you may be also” (v. 3).
He spoke concerning His death, and departure to be with the Father, so they would believe. These things would not happen randomly as events uncontrolled by God, but specifically as a part of His will. They would remember this, and therefore believe. The things He spoke about for so long were now at hand. Satan had been working in Judas Iscariot, and the Jewish leaders, and Jesus would soon be delivered up to be crucified. However, Satan had no hold on Jesus, so He would fulfill all that God sent Him to fulfill, because He loves Him. Such confidence and peace of mind is offered to those who follow Jesus’ example, and love the Father as did He.
