“You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels” (Revelation 3:4-5).
The church in Sardis was convicted of imperfect works (v. 2). They had a reputation for life, and righteousness, but were dead due to negligence, and unrighteousness. The Lord requires His people to keep busy with His noble work.
Despite the state of the church as a unit, there were some who were maintaining righteousness. They had kept their garments clean, and the Lord had noticed. We will be judged individually. We must each keep our own garments clean, that when Jesus appears we will be “clothed in white garments” for eternity!
“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12).
