There are some who refuse to subscribe to the concept of the plenary verbal inspiration of scripture – every word is inspired of God. This concept is seen in scripture itself, and is the pillar that supports the Bible as a source of authority. If plenary verbal inspiration is denied, scripture cannot be used as a pattern.
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). “Inspiration” is the translation of the Greek word, “theopneustos.” “Theopneustos” is a compound word which combines “theos” (God), with “pneo” (to breathe). A literal rendering of the passage shows that “All Scripture is [God breathed].” When we speak, breath emits from our mouth. Scripture is the breath of God in that the words are His, and no others’. It is not that some of Scripture comes from God, but “All Scripture.” “Let God be true but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4).
If the concept of the partial inspiration of scripture is accepted, it is necessary that we elevate ourselves to the position of judge. For, who determines that which is from God, thus binding, and that which is filler from man, thus not binding? All binding and loosing is done in heaven (cf. Matthew 16:19). Man plays no part. If we arbitrarily (how else can it be?) decide upon the parts of scripture which are inspired, and uninspired, we must necessarily humble ourselves in obedience to the inspired scripture. Yet, the only factor which determined its binding inspired nature was our own opinion. We not only make ourselves Judge, but we put our faith in self, not God. The plenary verbal inspiration of scripture is an indispensable concept. It is either all from God, or none of it is from God.
