“And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:18).
As the agent of creation, Christ has the preeminence in the universe (v. 15-17). As the head of the body, Christ has the preeminence in the church (v. 18a). Its government rests on His shoulders, and all must be done in His name (cf. 3:17). As the firstborn from the dead, Christ has the preeminence in the resurrection (v. 18b). Without His victory over death we ourselves cannot be victorious (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:12-19).
“Preeminence” simply means to be first. Christ is first in all things, thus His rule is all encompassing. However, as free moral agents, mankind makes the decision whether Christ is preeminent in their hearts. Does Christ come first in your life? Is He always first in your heart? Our actions tell the truth. Christ does not have the preeminence in your heart if your life is not under the constant guidance of His word (cf. Psalm 119:105). We must fully and constantly submit to Him. Remember Jesus’ words, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
