“And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” (Romans 13:11-14)
Each passing day, as it draws nigh, our salvation is enlarging upon the horizon of life. This is cause to rejoice. Yet, take caution. For, if our salvation is nearer than when we first believed, then our salvation we have not yet attained (cf. Philippians 3:12-14). To be near is not to be there. We must press on.
And what does this mean? We must awaken from the lethargy and indifference of sleep. We must ever be alert. No soldier sleeps in battle, and neither should we. Satan is hurling his fiery darts with stifling accuracy. We cannot afford any chinks in our armor. Our inner man should be equipped with the entire panoply of God (cf. Ephesians 6:10-20). The nearing of our salvation should ever awaken us to the dangers of losing it, and we must beware.
