“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: ‘Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.’” (Ephesians 5:8-14)
Christians are those who were once in the realm of darkness, the realm of sin. This position is most terrible, as it renders spiritual death – separation from God who has no darkness within Him (cf. 1 John 1:5-7). However, Christians are those who have been taken out of darkness, and have been conveyed into the kingdom of Christ (cf. Colossians 1:13). As such, Christians have spiritual life in fellowship with God who is light. Christians are “children of light.”
The Christian, then, is required to continue in the light. There are some who wish to renew their relationship with the darkness of sin while maintaining their walk in the light. This is impossible! There should be “no fellowship” with darkness. Furthermore, the Christian should constantly work to expose and reprove the works of darkness! Instead of maintaining fellowship with darkness and those in the darkness, Christians are to encourage men to awake from spiritual sleep, and come to Christ to receive salvation (v. 14). We must understand who we are as God’s children, and how it is God desires for us to live – Walk in Light!
