“He who despises the word will be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.” (Proverbs 13:13)
The word of God is given to us as a blessing. Without it we cannot know the mind of the Lord, and therefore cannot know His will for us (cf. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16). It is designed to lead us away from sin and death. When we hide it in our heart, we are fortified against sin (cf. Psalm 119:11). When we receive God’s word with meekness, and become doers of it, we are blessed (cf. James 1:21-25).
It is sad, then, to know that many refuse God’s word. They hear God’s word, and are convicted of their sin. This is the design of God’s word (cf. 2 Timothy 3:16-17). However, instead of submitting to God’s word, and allowing it to change their hearts and rid them of their sin, they despise it. They become provoked to wrath instead of humbling themselves before God (cf. James 1:19-20). This is folly.
Instead, we must have reverence for God and His word. We must understand it is for our good, and submit to it. Only then will we be rewarded! Do you despise the word, or do you fear the commandment?
