“My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.” (1 John 3:18-21)
The human spirit has a remarkable ability to convince itself it is on the straight and narrow when it is not. Christians must be aware of this satanic ploy. Our learned conscience serves as a spiritual warning system. When the knowledge of our heart’s true condition foments disquiet within, we must do something about it rather than ignore it.
Christ requires obedience (cf. Luke 6:46-49; John 14:15). It matters not if we declare our faith, and utter words which convince others of our faithfulness. If we do not follow the Lord in word and deed, we cannot please Him. Those living a hypocritical life whose conscience is not yet seared live with the titanic weight of a condemning heart. All others may be none the wiser, but we know better, and more importantly, God knows better. If our heart condemns us, we must repent to have confidence before God once again.
