“Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ Jesus said to him, ‘It is as you say'” (Matthew 27:11).
“When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews'” (v. 29)!
“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Corinthians 2:7-8).
God anointed Jesus as King. He would eventually sit upon the throne in heaven (cf. Psalm 110:1). Yet, despite the overwhelming display of evidence validating the statement of Jesus, the Jews disbelieved. They would not be convinced unless He delivered them from the Roman rule. But His kingdom was not of that sort (cf. John 18:36). So, the Jews mocked Him and killed Him. They were ignorant of the depths of their crime. They had committed regicide.
Regicide is defined as, “the killing of a king.” They knew they had put an innocent man to death, but were ignorant concerning the fact that Jesus was the one who would rule on the everlasting throne of David (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12-16). Such knowledge is indispensable, but still under appreciated by many. For men still commit the most severe form of regicide as they sin willfully, and trample the Son of God underfoot, counting His blood as common (cf. Hebrews 10:29). Do you?
