The Hebrew epistle is addressed to Christians experiencing difficult times of adversity – they were being persecuted for their faith. They allowed this to shrink their faith. They had “forgotten the exhortation which speaks to [them] as to sons: ‘My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.'” (Hebrews 12:6-7) We need to understand the chastening of the Lord and respond correctly.
