Question smallerThe subject of our text is the Word. The three words that Genesis begins with are the same as the three John uses to begin his gospel, “In the beginning” (Genesis 1:1).John describes the Word as being in the beginning. This Word of which John speaks, we will later learn, is Jesus (1:14-18).This text shows the deity of Christ. He is the Word, “and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus, contrary to some speculation, was not the first creation. “He was in the beginning with God.” Creation, contrary to popular belief, did not happen by God the Father merely speaking it into existence. Rather, creation was accomplished through the Word. “Without Him nothing was made that was made.”

In the Word is life and light. Spiritual life is made possible through Jesus. Without Him the world would have no hope. Sin is darkness (Ephesians 5:11), and Jesus is the light which exposes it that we might not walk in darkness (John 12:46). Those in the world have purposely denied themselves the gift of this light because of their strong desire for darkness (John 3:19). Let us accept this light, which is Christ, and “Be saved from this perverse generation” (Acts 2:40)!
