Question smallerWithin the text are the closing statements of Paul’s letter to the saints in Rome. In his finishing thoughts there is an assurance given. The subject is “Him who is able to establish you.” Paul explains that God is able to establish them “according to his gospel.” The gospel of which Paul speaks is the one he had brought not only to the saints in Rome, but to all whom he ministered (1 Corinthians 2:2; Galatians 3:8-9; Ephesians 2:1; Philippians 1:18; Colossians 1:5; 1 Thessalonians 2:13). This gospel was inclusive of the “preaching of Jesus Christ.”

Paul explains that the gospel he is speaking of is the mystery that had been “kept secret since the world began.” However, this mystery has been revealed and “made manifest.” The mystery is not only revealed to the Romans whom he is writing, but to “all the nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God” (Matthew 28:18-20). Paul implies that the only way God can establish them is through their “obedience to the faith.” The only one who can establish us is God. “Now to Him who is able to establish you – to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.”
