Question smallerGod has shown His love for Christians in His scheme of redemption. Before the foundation of the world God chose a special people for salvation (cf. Ephesians 1:4). Contrary to Calvinistic doctrine this predestination is not individual. The text clearly states that man obtains salvation “through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” The Spirit and our faith set us apart from the world. Those who are sanctified will have salvation! We are joint heirs with Christ through faith, and our faith is displayed through baptism (cf. Galatians 3:26-29). When Christ appears, those who are sanctified will also appear with Him in glory (cf. Colossians 3:4).

This calling has appeared to all men. It does not teach us to continue in sin (cf. Romans 6:1). It does not teach us to be idle (cf. 3:6-9). However, it does teach us to “stand fast!” This grace of God that brings salvation teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly (cf. Titus 2:11)! The Thessalonians were sanctified, but they were to continue to sanctify themselves, and purify themselves just as their savior is pure (cf. 1 John 3:3)!
