Question smallerIn the text given, James aptly describes the proper reaction to God’s word. It is of grave importance that we understand this reaction is the only one fit for citizens of the kingdom of God.

Hear the word. It is impossible to please God without faith (cf. Hebrews 11:6). That faith can only come by hearing God’s word (cf. Romans 10:17)! We must give attention to His word before acting rashly, and we should lay aside all wrath that might obstruct our hearing of that word.

Lay aside all – repent. Repentance is a must. We cannot follow God’s word while hanging on to past sins. We must turn away from them, and change our mind about them. If God’s word condemns such, we should be willing to lay it aside, and receive His word.

Do the word. It is not enough to merely hear God’s word. James writes in the next chapter of the folly of faith without works (cf. 2:14-26). If we only hear the word, and fail to do it, we deceive ourselves. The word makes manifest our imperfections. It is foolish to let them remain unattended to. This religion requires an abstinence from things in the world, and a heart willing to perform good deeds.
