1069919_412031702250347_941912030_nI recall a post I came across on Facebook that stated “Religion says do. Jesus says done.” This false notion is motivated by the idea that we are saved by grace alone. The doctrine removes the need for obedience, and personal responsibility. The scripture clearly describes two parts to salvation – God’s, and man’s. While we must recognize that salvation is by grace, it is vital that we also recognize it is not by grace alone.

The inspired apostle Paul wrote not to accept any gospel that differs from the one he and the rest of the apostles taught (cf. Galatians 1:6-10). He wrote in another place, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12). Why then do individuals argue that we are saved by grace alone?

The scripture reveals, “by grace you have been saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). Grace = God’s part. Faith = Man’s part. Faith is trusting God’s word, and doing as He commands. For example – “you were…buried with Him in baptism, in which you were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead” (Colossians 2:11-12).

It is inaccurate to say we have been saved by one thing only. The scriptures speak of several things that all play a role in the salvation of man.

Saved by grace (cf. Ephesians 2:8).
Saved by faith (cf. John 8:24; Ephesians 2:8).
Saved by baptism (cf. 1 Peter 3:21).
Saved by the gospel (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2).
Saved by preaching (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:21).
Saved by Christ’s blood (cf. 1 Peter 1:18-19).
Saved by the Holy Spirit (cf. Ephesians 1:13-14).
Etc.

We must not leave anything out of the formula provided by God for our salvation.
