rsz_articles_20webUnselfish – In order to maintain unity within a local congregation, one must have the mind of Christ. “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Necessary – Unity is not optional. God’s design for the church demands unity, and relates to His divine nature. “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).

Individuals – The church’s unity, and success, ultimately depends upon individual members acting as God has commanded. “The whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16).

Truth – The unity God requires can only be found in truth. Truth does not divide. This unity is “of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3). The Holy Spirit has revealed God’s will. We are only to abide by the truth God has given us. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Yearn – Unity should be something we yearn for. It is imperative that we are united. Therefore, we should “[endeavor] to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).
