Our gospel meeting starts this week! Brother Pittman has put forth diligence in preparation of eight sermons from God’s word. While we look forward to his efforts in the preaching of the gospel this week, we must also recognize our responsibilities as listeners. Compared to those in Thessalonica, the Holy Spirit revealed the outstanding character of the Bereans. We would do well to emulate them.

  • Fair-minded – The Bereans had a noble character. They were willing to give Paul and Silas a fair hearing. They did not limit their time, but evidently heard their teaching “daily.” Are you willing to give Mike your undivided attention this week, laying aside all biases and preconceived notions? “Be swift to hear, [and] slow to speak” (James 1:19).
  • Readiness – The Bereans not only were prepared to hear Paul and Silas, but were ready to put that word into action if it proved to be true. This is a predisposition all must possess when hearing God’s word. Are you ready to put the things Mike preaches into daily practice if they be true (cf. James 1:19-25)?
  • Daily Scripture Searching – The Bereans understood they had the personal responsibility to examine Paul and Silas’ teaching. It is unwise to assume what is being preached is right or wrong (cf. 1 John 4:1). God has given us an unchanging standard that we can compare everything with (cf. 2 Timothy 3:16-17). Are you ready and willing to give your due diligence in further study of the things taught by Mike this week?
