It appears that Jude had originally intended to write concerning a slightly different subject. The positive subject of “our common salvation” was being threatened by false teachers. It was a subject that no doubt would have brought joy to Jude’s audience, but if it was compromised by false doctrine in made no difference. So he wrote, “Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Our salvation in Christ is worth much, and as such, it is worth fighting for.
